Money Makes The World Go Round!
by Priory School on

This week, we have been handling money and understanding the value of the different coins. This has been achieved in different ways from playing games, solving problems and patterns and working out what coins would be needed to pay for items.

Year 1, have also been learning their number bonds to 10. We ended the week playing matching pairs. If they caught the ball, they had to throw it back and give the number that would make 10.

In phonics this week, we worked on initial blends. On Friday, everyone hunted in the dictionaries for words that began with these sounds.

We ended our Scottish islands project this week by listening to the bagpipes and singing a couple of traditional Scottish folk songs.

Some of the class were inspired by Scottish artist Frank Boag and began painting their own landscape paintings.

We had some spare time at the end of the week so some of Year 1 chose to build, others decided to do some colouring and the remainder enjoyed the outdoors.

Next week, we'll be adding and subtracting in Numeracy, looking at plants and soil and understanding how the 'magic e' works when found at the end of words.

Jamie and The Magic Torch
by Priory School on

This week, Year 1 have been watching Jamie and The Magic Torch as inspiration for their fantasy writing. They enjoyed it so much that another episode had to be found!

In pairs, the children then planned their own Jamie adventure. They drew small pictures to help tell their story.

They then used their drawings to help tell their story to the rest of the class.

At the end of the week, everyone shared ideas in preparation for writing their own adventure next week.

Phonics this week, has been inspired by Countdown. We had our very own 'Carol' and even the famous clock!

Year one have been working on graphs this week. We collected data from the class and created graphs on the laptops.

We continued with our Geography project on Scottish Islands. The Katie Morag stories have proven to be popular and a fun way of learning about differences here in Tadley compared with The Isle of Struay.

Next week, we'll be continuing with our Scottish Island project, writing our Jamie adventure stories and working on cvcc and ccvc words.

Prepartations for The Jubilee and The Olympics
by Priory School on

This week began with music, dance, costumes and entertainment from countries afar. Year 1 were split into two groups. Half learnt about music from Brazil and the others learnt about the sounds and dance from Hawaii. We learnt our routines in the morning, then came together with the rest of the school to perform our Olympic themed musical ceremony.

We have also been perfecting our country dancing moves this week.

Year 1 have started their Geography topic on Scottish islands. We discovered that we knew a lot about Scotland. The atlases helped everyone understand the different land formations and population settlements.

Thankfully, the weather was dry long enough for us on Friday to plant some of the 6 million trees for the Queen's Jubilee. Everyone had a turn planting the saplings.

Next week, we'll be working on writing our own fantasy stories, learning more about Scotland, perfecting our country dancing and blending cvcc and ccvc words.

A ray of sunshine even though it's been raining!
by Priory School on

It's been another week of April showers. Year 1, have again been dodging the rain and hoping that it stayed dry long enough to escape the confines of the classroom.

We had a ray of sunshine when Randolph Matthews, singer-song writer visited The Priory on Thursday. Year 1 were captivated from the word 'Go!'. Actions and vocal gymnastics were performed with gusto.

Here's Randolph playing with words and sounds with an eager audience.

Randolph created a story with talking animals which inspired him and Year 1 to create this musical song and dance.

Nearing the end of the session, Randolph had an amusing conversation about wands before allowing Year 1 to transform him.

Year 1 now realise what the buzz amongst the Juniors has been all about. They loved Randolph and would have happily spent the day with him!

Looking onwards to next week, Year 1 will be looking at fantasy stories, creating pictures of The Queen and meeting another visitor on Monday. Don't forget to dress your best on Tuesday for the Year 1 class photograph.

April Showers
by Priory School on

This week has been spent dashing in and out of school to avoid the April showers. This inspired us to sing songs and write our own rain poems. We also learnt about Passover and had a go at some country dancing. Take a look.

Here are some of Year 1 practising their rain song. Have a listen to their final efforts.

In pairs, everyone wrote their own rain poem.

We learnt about Passover and the story of Moses, Pharaoh and The Ten Plagues.

Year 1 had a go at country dancing. The boys were not impressed that they had to partner a girl! Everyone got the hang of it very quickly.

We had time to play a board game in groups. Everyone got on and there was no arguing!

Look what we made on a wet Friday afternoon. Team work = Space stations!

Next week, we'll be continuing with our poetry, learning more country dancing and revising more of our phonic sounds. Hopefully the sunshine will make an appearance. Fingers crossed!

Here are the boys working on their drama talents.

Miss Laugier taught some phonics outside. Here are Year 1 enjoying a competition.

Some of our Numeracy lessons were all about time. We used clocks to practise o'clock and half past.

Year 1 revised their understanding of time at the end of the week. There were some interesting answers as to when they do different things during the day.

Here is Miss Laugier demonstrating a human clock. What time is it everyone?

Year 1 enjoyed preparing for their play. Here they are rehearsing with their penguin hats.

We are hoping to perform our play to Reception on Monday.

Come Fly With Tokyo Airways!
by Priory School on

Year 1 were very surprised to discover that they were booked onto a flight to Japan this week alongside their regular lessons. Everyone played along in good spirits much to the amusement of the rest of the school!

After all our passengers had boarded and our Captain had taken off, we learnt some Japanese numbers so we didn't return with excess baggage.

Our passengers were good sports and joined in a counting game. They were very good at Japanese numbers to ten.

All our passengers were very healthy with their selection of on board refreshments. They wanted to arrive in Japan feeling refreshed.

The cabin crew attended to our passengers needs when they required assistance with the in-flight magazine quiz.

After a slightly bumpy landing, our Captain wished our passengers a safe and enjoyable stay in Japan.

As well as jet setting, we've been painting some Japanese blossom.

Miss Laugier has been teaching new phonics sounds this week in a variety of ways.

We've also taken advantage of the late afternoon sunshine by being active on the adventure trail.

Next week, Year 1 will be looking at time, revising the phonic sounds learnt this term and learning more about Japan.

A Multitude of Talents!
by Priory School on

This week has seen Year 1 treading the boards performing a story about friendship in assembly this week. It was a challenge to fit everything in alongside our regular lessons.

Year 1 were using cubes to find the difference in length.

Everyone spent some time planning their recount story for next week.

We had a multi-sensory phonics lesson learning the sound 'air'.

Miss Laugier taught some more basketball skills to Year 1. They're coming along so well, she's thinking of signing some of them up to play for her team!

Here are Year 1 waiting patiently for the whole school to arrive for their assembly.

Our story was all about friendship.

The two girls didn't wouldn't let the Little Princess join in their game.

It all ended happily as the Little Princess was prepared to forgive the unkind children and ended

up with lots of friends.

Next week, Year 1 will be continuing to learn about Japan, writing their recount stories and

learning two new sounds 'er' and 'ure'.

We have the force!
by Priory School on

We have been looking at pushes and pulls in our Science lessons this week.

Year 1 worked out that they were pushing and pulling a ball towards each other in their P.E. lesson.

Everyone blew some paint bubbles and caught them on paper. Then we went outside and blew more bubbles.

Year 1 were trying to work out if different shaped wands would create square or triangular shaped bubbles.

Then we found some magnets and had a play. Year 1 realised they had push and pull forces too.

We made words with the magnetic letters and realised that magnets would 'stick' to some materials.

In Numeracy, we looked at 2D shape and lines of symmetry.

Miss Laugier set everyone a challenge to find as many different shapes as possible on the pictures.

We even had the laptops out and worked on a shape programme.

Year 1 came to school on Friday dressed as their favourite book character. There were a variety of different characters, both old and new favourites.

Year 1, sat in groups looking at a selection of books. They had to say why they would pick one book out from another.

Finally, Miss Laugier was so impressed with everyone's efforts with their French posters, that she created a display. Well done!

Next week, Year 1 will be continuing with their recount work in Literacy and focusing on 'ear' and 'air'. We'll also be focusing on friendship.
